Maha Mamo nasceu apátrida e viveu nas sombras no Líbano por 26 anos. Isso significa não poder ir à escola, ao hospital, viajar. Existir. Mas a luta incansável de Maha Mamo para pertencer finalmente valeu a pena em outubro de 2018, quando ela ganhou a cidadania brasileira. Maha Mamo nasceu apátrida devido a uma rede de leis restritivas ao registro civil na Síria e no Líbano, os dois países com os quais ela tinha vínculos. Ela está determinada a defender os direitos dos apátridas, na esperança de acabar com a apatridia em todo o mundo. Ela também defende o fim das leis discriminatórias que impedem as mulheres de passar sua cidadania para seus filhos.

I'm 30 years old, and a month ago, I got my first passport.	Tenho 30 anos e, há um mês, consegui meu primeiro passaporte.
For most people, like you, it's just a technicality, a document in the shape of a small book, with a colored cover, that allows you to travel.	Para a maioria das pessoas, como você, é apenas uma tecnicalidade, um documento em forma de livrinho, com capa colorida, que permite viajar.
But, for me, it was life.	Mas, para mim, era a vida.
It was a sign that I belong somewhere.	Era um sinal de que pertenço a algum lugar.
You know why?	Você sabe porque?
Because I've lived my entire life as a stateless person.	Porque eu vivi toda a minha vida como uma apátrida.
Do you know what "stateless person" is?	Você sabe o que é "apátrida"?
A human can get her or his nationality in two ways: from the land where you were born or from the bloodline.	Um humano pode obter sua nacionalidade de duas maneiras: da terra onde nasceu ou da linhagem.
Take Italy.	Pegue a Itália.
If you're born in Italy, you're not Italian.	Se você nasceu na Itália, você não é italiano.
If your parents are, then you can get the Italian passport.	Se seus pais são, então você pode obter o passaporte italiano.
But millions of people around the world have neither option, like me.	Mas milhões de pessoas ao redor do mundo não têm nenhuma opção, como eu.
I was born in Lebanon.	Eu nasci no Líbano.
Lebanon gives you nationality only if your father is Lebanese.	O Líbano só lhe dá nacionalidade se seu pai for libanês.
But my parents are Syrian.	Mas meus pais são sírios.
My mom is Muslim and my father is Christian.	Minha mãe é muçulmana e meu pai é cristão.
When they decided to get married, in Syria, the inter-religious marriage is illegal.	Quando decidiram se casar, na Síria, o casamento inter-religioso é ilegal.
So, in 1985, they went to a neighboring country, to Lebanon.	Então, em 1985, eles foram para um país vizinho, o Líbano.
They tried to get married there.	Eles tentaram se casar lá.
They could just get married in a church ceremony, but never register it.	Eles poderiam simplesmente se casar em uma cerimônia na igreja, mas nunca registrá-la.
Soon after, my sister, my brother and I were born.	Logo depois, minha irmã, meu irmão e eu nascemos.

We were born as stateless people.	Nascemos como apátridas.
For us, it was a normal life.	Para nós, era uma vida normal.
We're going to live it, and then we're going to grow up.	Vamos vivê-la e depois crescer.
We didn't even know what challenges and problems were waiting for us.	Nem sabíamos que desafios e problemas nos esperavam.
The first problem we faced was in school, when my mother wanted to register us in school and she had to beg every single director.	O primeiro problema que enfrentamos foi na escola, quando minha mãe queria nos matricular na escola e ela teve que implorar a cada diretor.
She went to three schools, and we were denied, because the first question they asked her, "Who are they? Where are their documents?"	Ela foi a três escolas, e fomos rejeitados, porque a primeira pergunta que fizeram a ela, "Quem são eles? Onde estão seus documentos?"
As we didn't have anything, they just turned us away.	Como não tínhamos nada, eles simplesmente nos mandaram embora.
Then, luckily, in Lebanon, we had a civil war, and not all officials were paying attention to the rules.	Então, felizmente, no Líbano, tivemos uma guerra civil e nem todos os funcionários estavam atentos às regras.
My mom could convince another school, and an Armenian school accepted us.	Minha mãe conseguiu convencer outra escola, e uma escola armênia nos aceitou.
So I started studying.	Então comecei a estudar.
The most beautiful one.	O mais bonito.
(Laughter) Just like everyone else, same uniform, same teachers and same education.	Como todo mundo, mesmo uniforme, mesmos professores e mesma educação.
I felt life is easy, that we don't have anything.	Senti que a vida é fácil, que não temos nada.
If you look at us, we seem three teenagers, Souad, Eddy and me, three teenagers living their life, hoping and dreaming of a better future.	Se você olhar para nós, parecemos três adolescentes, Souad, Eddy e eu, três adolescentes vivendo sua vida, esperando e sonhando com um futuro melhor.
But that wasn't the reality.	Mas essa não era a realidade.
Everything that you take for granted in your life, we didn't have.	Tudo o que você considera como certo em sua vida, nós não tínhamos.
We were facing challenges and problems every single day.	Enfrentamos desafios e problemas todos os dias.
I have a severe allergy.	Eu tenho uma alergia severa.
The name is urticaria.	O nome é urticária.
When it attacks me, I should run to the hospital to be attended to.	Quando me ataca, preciso correr para o hospital para ser atendida.
Unfortunately, the first question they ask, "Where are your documents?"	Infelizmente, a primeira pergunta que eles fazem: "Onde estão seus documentos?"
Every time I should go, I had to take my best friend Nicole with me to be admitted under her name.	Toda vez que eu precisava ir, eu tinha que levar minha melhor amiga Nicole comigo para ser admitida com o nome dela.
I remember one day Nicole showed me a passport, a vaccination passport of her own dog.	Lembro-me de que um dia, Nicole me mostrou um passaporte, um passaporte de vacinação de seu próprio cachorro.
Yes, her dog had the right to medical care.	Sim, seu cachorro tinha direito a cuidados médicos.
I didn't, neither my brother nor my sister.	Eu não, nem meu irmão nem minha irmã.
The smallest things that I used to live every single day reminded me over and over that I'm a stateless person.	As menores coisas que eu vivenciava todos os dias me lembravam repetidamente que eu era uma apátrida.
Going to buy a SIM card, or going to a club to enjoy with your friends, the first question, "Where is your document?"	Comprar um cartão SIM, ou ir a um clube para curtir com os amigos, a primeira pergunta, "Onde está seu documento?"
As I don't have anything to present, then I couldn't do it.	Como não tenho nada para apresentar, então não podia fazer a atividade.
Imagine if I needed a credit card or health insurance.	Imagine se eu precisasse de um cartão de crédito ou seguro de saúde.
That was kind of impossible.	Isso era meio que impossível.
I really wanted to be a professional basketball player.	Eu realmente queria ser uma jogadora de basquete profissional.
I'm not that tall, but I'm really fast.	Não sou tão alta, mas sou muito rápida.
(Laughter) I had the skills, but not the magic documents.	Eu tinha as habilidades, mas não os documentos mágicos.
The biggest fear we had was just walking on the street and seeing a checkpoint, because every time I see a police checkpoint, I have to run to the other side because I don't have a document to present whenever I am stopped.	O maior medo que tínhamos era andar na rua e ver um posto de controle, porque toda vez que vejo um posto policial, tenho que correr para o outro lado porque não tenho documentos para apresentar quando sou parada.
When I finished school, I really wanted to study.	Quando terminei a escola, eu realmente queria estudar.
I wanted to do medicine.	Eu queria fazer medicina.
I had good grades.	Eu tinha boas notas.
And then, at the first university I went to with my grades, hoping that they could listen to me and to my case, the admission officer just took the documents and threw them on my face.	E então, na primeira universidade que eu fui com minhas notas, esperando que eles pudessem ouvir a mim e ao meu caso, o oficial de admissão simplesmente pegou os documentos e jogou na minha cara.
He said, "If you're Lebanese, you can study. If you're a foreigner, you can study as well. We're not joking here. Who are you?"	Ele disse: "Se você é libanêsa, você pode estudar. Se você é estrangeira, você também pode estudar. Não estamos brincando aqui. Quem é você?"
Deep inside, I knew, "That's a dream, that's impossible. I will never be able to study."	No fundo, eu sabia: "Isso é um sonho, isso é impossível. Eu nunca vou poder estudar."
But I really wanted to.	Mas eu realmente queria.
So I simply [made] a list of all the universities in Lebanon and then went to one after the other, begging and asking, "Please, I need to study." Until I found one.	Até que encontrei uma.
They accepted me as a favor, and they told me, "Welcome. We don't have Medicine, but we have Information Systems Management."	Eles me aceitaram como um favor e me disseram: "Bem-vinda. Não temos Medicina, mas temos Gestão de Sistemas de Informação".
So I said, "That's okay."	Então eu disse: "Tudo bem."
I started studying, and I even went further and I did my MBA degree and I graduated with a master's degree.	Comecei a estudar, e ainda fui mais longe e fiz meu MBA e me formei com mestrado.
And now?	E agora?
What am I supposed to do?	O que eu deveria fazer?
I finished school, I cannot work, I cannot live, I cannot travel.	Terminei a escola, não posso trabalhar, não posso viver, não posso viajar.
What future is waiting for me?	Que futuro me espera?
Would I dare to have kids and put them in the same situation that I am?	Será que eu ousaria ter filhos e colocá-los na mesma situação que eu?
Would I dare to dream?	Será que eu ousaria sonhar?
I had to choose.	Eu tive que escolher.
So, I started sending [out] my story.	Então, comecei a enviar minha história.
I wrote a card and started sending it [out] all over the world, inside Lebanon, to Syria, to everywhere, to anyone I could reach, and I got replies.	Eu escrevi um cartão e comecei a enviá-lo para todo o mundo, dentro do Líbano, para a Síria, para todos os lugares, para qualquer pessoa que eu pudesse alcançar, e recebi respostas.
Many embassies replied to me.	Muitas embaixadas me responderam.
They simply denied me.	Simplesmente disseram não.
I was refused.	Fui recusada.
The only country that accepted my case was Brazil.	O único país que aceitou meu caso foi o Brasil.
(Cheering) (Applause) But not because I was stateless.	Mas não porque eu era apátrida.
Because in 2014, Brazil opened the door with a humanitarian visa for Syrian refugees.	Porque em 2014, o Brasil abriu as portas com visto humanitário para refugiados sírios.
Again, the chaos of war helped me to start a new life.	Mais uma vez, o caos da guerra me ajudou a começar uma nova vida.
Start a new life!	Começar uma nova vida!
But in a country named Brazil, the only two things I know about it are the football players and the amazing Carnival.	Mas em um país chamado Brasil, as únicas duas coisas que conheço são os jogadores de futebol e o incrível Carnaval.
Where should I go?	Onde devo ir?
Where am I going to sleep?	Onde vou dormir?
What will I do?	O que vou fazer?
How am I going to live my life there?	Como vou viver minha vida lá?
How am I going to survive?	Como vou sobreviver?
But I said, "I'm ready for the challenge."	Mas eu disse: "Estou pronta para o desafio".
Me, my sister and my brother, we went to the unknown, to Brazil.	Eu, minha irmã e meu irmão, fomos para o desconhecido, para o Brasil.
We said, "We're ready for a new beginning."	Dissemos: "Estamos prontos para um novo começo".
When I got there, I used to speak four languages: Arabic, English, Armenian and French.	Quando cheguei lá, eu falava quatro línguas: árabe, inglês, armênio e francês.
But not Portuguese.	Mas não português.
And I had my master's degree, but I couldn't find a job.	E fiz mestrado, mas não consegui emprego.
The only job that I could do at that time was pamphleting, distributing pamphlets, me and Eddy, on the streets.	O único trabalho que eu podia fazer naquela época era panfletagem, distribuição de panfletos, eu e Eddy, nas ruas.
You can see this big smile on our faces, yes.	Você pode ver esse grande sorriso em nossos rostos, sim.
We were really happy to be able to work legally for the first time in our life.	Ficamos muito felizes por poder trabalhar legalmente pela primeira vez na vida.
And we started learning Portuguese on napkins because we needed to integrate into society.	E começamos a aprender português em guardanapos porque precisávamos nos integrar na sociedade.
A few months later, I got a better job.	Alguns meses depois, consegui um emprego melhor.
I started working as an operation manager in the import and export of cattle, but it wasn't a good job by any means.	Comecei a trabalhar como gerente de operações na importação e exportação de gado, mas de forma alguma era um bom trabalho.
I was always underpaid.	Sempre fui mal paga.
Me, my sister and my brother, we were working, but we were underpaid because of our status.	Eu, minha irmã e meu irmão trabalhávamos, mas éramos mal pagos por causa do nosso status.
With all this, even with all the struggling, we were optimistic.	Com tudo isso, mesmo com toda a luta, estávamos otimistas.
We were three adults, happy and ready to wait.	Éramos três adultos, felizes e prontos para esperar.
In Brazil, at that time, we didn't have a law for stateless people.	No Brasil, naquela época, não existia uma lei para apátridas.
Stateless people didn't have a law.	Os apátridas não tinham uma lei.
But we were three adults, happy and dreaming that one day, Brazil was going to change the laws.	Mas éramos três adultos, felizes e sonhando que um dia o Brasil mudaria as leis.
On May 30, 2016, we were approved as refugees.	Em 30 de maio de 2016, fomos aprovados como refugiados.
And who between you wants to be a refugee, or dreams about it?	E quem entre vocês quer ser um refugiado, ou sonha com isso?
That was my dream.	Esse era o meu sonho.
That was my dream because with the refugee status in Brazil, I could get my first document, my first residency ever, with my photo and my name, with the right to stay there for five years, in the same territory, legally.	Esse era o meu sonho porque com o status de refugiado no Brasil, eu poderia conseguir meu primeiro documento, minha primeira residência, com minha foto e meu nome, com direito a ficar lá por cinco anos, no mesmo território, legalmente.
I had the right to live, to work, to dream, to believe, to have a bank account, and to have all the basic rights that I'd never had.	Eu tinha o direito de viver, trabalhar, sonhar, acreditar, ter uma conta bancária e ter todos os direitos básicos que nunca tive.
But life is cruel, life is really bad, because exactly after one month of this happiness, I lost my brother.	Mas a vida é cruel, a vida é muito ruim, porque exatamente depois de um mês dessa felicidade, perdi meu irmão.
He was killed ...	Ele foi morto ...
He was stopped by drugged up adolescents that were trying to rob him.	Ele foi parado por adolescentes drogados que estavam tentando roubá-lo.
The only thing that they took from him was his life.	A única coisa que tiraram dele foi sua vida.
My brother, he died as a stateless person.	Meu irmão, ele morreu como um apátrida.
Eddy ...	Eddy...
I will always miss him.	Eu sempre sentirei falta dele.
I will always miss you.	Eu sempre sentirei sua falta.
And he was lucky enough, because one month before, he got his residency.	E ele teve sorte, porque um mês antes, ele tinha conseguido sua residência.
What's that supposed to mean?	O que isso deveria significar?
It means he got his death certificate.	Significa que ele conseguiu a certidão de óbito.
Why?	Por quê?
Because stateless people, they don't have a birth certificate, and stateless people, they don't have a death certificate.	Porque os apátridas não têm certidão de nascimento e os apátridas não têm certidão de óbito.
They're just born, live and just leave, like a shadow, like people that have never existed.	Eles simplesmente nascem, vivem e vão embora, como uma sombra, como pessoas que nunca existiram.
I used to think it was only me, my brother and my sister in this situation, that it was only the three of us.	Eu costumava pensar que era só eu, meu irmão e minha irmã nessa situação, que éramos só nós três.
But when I started working more closely with the UNHCR and discovered their new campaign to end statelessness, "I Belong," I saw that in the world, there 10 million stateless people.	Mas quando comecei a trabalhar mais de perto com o ACNUR e descobri sua nova campanha para acabar com a apatridia, "I Belong", vi que no mundo existem 10 milhões de apátridas.
Imagine the size of the population of a country like Portugal.	Imagine o tamanho da população de um país como Portugal.
Imagine a whole population that doesn't have any right to exist or to belong.	Imagine uma população inteira que não tem nenhum direito de existir ou pertencer.
So I said, "I need to do something."	Então eu disse: "Eu preciso fazer alguma coisa."
I started sharing my story with everyone.	Comecei a compartilhar minha história com todos.
I did many documentaries, journals, [speeches], anyone and everywhere, wherever they'd invite me to and give me the space to share my story.	Fiz muitos documentários, diários, discursos, qualquer um e em qualquer lugar, onde quer que me convidassem e me dessem espaço para compartilhar minha história.
I started to raise my voice.	Comecei a levantar a voz.
I started to explain to people that statelessness is a human rights problem.	Comecei a explicar às pessoas que a apatridia é um problema de direitos humanos.
In the laws, there is a simple thing we can do, which is just try to change them.	Nas leis, há uma coisa simples que podemos fazer, que é tentar mudá-las.
Imagine if I was born and I could get my Syrian mother's nationality, if my mom could pass her nationality on to me.	Imagine se eu nascesse e pudesse obter a nacionalidade da minha mãe síria, se minha mãe pudesse passar a nacionalidade dela para mim.
I would maybe today be a doctor, living in Lebanon or Syria, and maybe Eddy would still be with us.	Talvez hoje eu fosse uma médica, morando no Líbano ou na Síria, e talvez Eddy ainda estivesse conosco.
This is a simple thing.	Isso é uma coisa simples.
We need to change discrimination in the law and we need to give the right for a woman to pass her nationality on.	Precisamos mudar a discriminação na lei e precisamos dar o direito de uma mulher transmitir a sua nacionalidade.
Today, we still have 25 countries that will not let a woman pass her nationality on to her children.	Hoje, ainda temos 25 países que não permitem que uma mulher transmita sua nacionalidade para seus filhos.
We need states to identify stateless people - this 10 million, it's an estimate - and to facilitate their naturalization.	Precisamos que os estados identifiquem os apátridas - esses 10 milhões, é uma estimativa - e facilitem sua naturalização.
To make this happen, it's so simple: by changing the law.	Para que isso aconteça, é tão simples: mudem a lei.
Because everyone has the right to belong.	Porque todos têm o direito de pertencer.
And Brazil, they did it.	E no Brasil, eles conseguiram.
Today, with this amazing, lovely Brazilian passport, I'm proud to announce, today I'm Brazilian; today I belong.	Hoje, com este incrível e adorável passaporte brasileiro, tenho o orgulho de anunciar, hoje sou brasileira; hoje eu pertenço.
And everyone has the right to belong.	E todos têm o direito de pertencer.
